10. Partnership to Enhance the University of Liberia Human Subject Protection System (2003-2005)

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). The goal was to support an institutional review board (IRB) and provide technical assistance in human subject protections.

11. HIV/STD Prevention Program for High Risk Youth in Liberia (2006-2011)

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). The goal is to prevent HIV/STD among both in-school and out-of-school urban youths in Liberia based on a randomized controlled trial (RCT). A behavioral-driven intervention program, Making Proud Choices (MPC), was modified, adapted, implemented and evaluated. MPC was developed by a research team from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

12. Abstinence-Based HIV/STD Prevention Program for Orphans and Vulnerable Youths in Liberia (2007-2008)

Funded by Global Fund/UNDP-Liberia in collaboration with Samaritan Purse (SP)-Liberia. The goal is to promote behavioral change among vulnerable youths in Montserrado, Margibi and Lofa Counties to abstain from sex until marriage. Over 1,000 youths were reached with the program.

13. Liberia School-Based HIV/STD Prevention Program (2008-2010)

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). The goal is to prevent HIV/STDs among 6th and 7th grade students from 8 junior high schools in Monrovia, Liberia, based on a randomized controlled trial (RCT). A modified version of a behavioral-driven science based intervention program, Making Proud Choices (MPC), will be administered and evaluated. MPC was developed by a research team from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

14. Pilot Study of Men Having Sex with Men (MSM) in Liberia (2008).

Funded by ACRE-USA Developmental Grant. The goal is to examine the health-related issues of adult MSM; identify the behavioral and service delivery factors that place them at risk for HIV/STDs; and utilize the information to guide program development and policy formulation.

15. Pilot Study to Assess the Feasibility of Adapting SISTA, An HIV/STD Prevention Program for Young Women in Liberia (2008)

Funded by ACRE-USA Developmental Grant. The goal is to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the feasibility of adapting an effective, gender-based HIV/STD prevention program, Sisters Informing Sisters about Topics on AIDS (SISTA), for young urban women in Monrovia, Liberia. The feasibility of using Audio-Computer Assisted Self-Interviewing (ACASI) technology was also assessed for survey administration. The SISTA Program was developed by a research team from Emory University School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

16. Qualitative Assessment of HIV Risk Behaviors among MSM in Liberia (2009).

Funded by AmFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research. The goal of this project was to conduct key informant qualitative interviews among young urban men who have sex with men (MSM) to determine their unique HIV/STD prevention-related needs in order to guide the development of culturally relevant programs and policies for this high risk population in post-conflict Liberia.

17. Building Research Infrastructure & Capacity to Implement an HIV/STD Prevention Trial in Post-Conflict Liberia (2010-2012).

Funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). The goal of this project is to support infrastructure development and build capacity in infectious disease research, as well as implement and evaluate an HIV/STD prevention program and conduct STD screening and management among rural youths in Bong County, Liberia.

18. Strengthening the Capacity of UL-IRB (2010-2012).

Funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). The goal of this project is to strengthen the capacity of the University of Liberia-Institutional Review Board (UL-IRB) in order to train local Liberian investigators and researchers based at the University of Liberia in research ethics and human subject protections.
